Manchester Utd 0-0 Manchester City

The build-up to Wednesday's encounter promised much, with both sides harbouring title ambitions.
Unfortunately, the action on the field failed to deliver, with a tame goalless draw doing little to capture the imagination.
Clear-cut chances proved to be few and far between throughout, with defences very much on top.
United boss Ferguson admitted afterwards that City, who opted to pack the midfield, got their game plan just about spot on, with the Red Devils unable to offer any penetration in the final third.
"City are always difficult to beat on their own ground, and that was obviously going to be the case the way they set their stall out second half," he told Sky Sports.
"I think there was too much tension for it to be the kind of match people thought it would be. But I was pleased with the control we had of the game and some of our football was very good.

Chelsea beat Stoke City 7-0

Chelsea stormed back to the top of the Premier League as Salomon Kalou's hat-trick inspired a 7-0 win over Stoke on Sunday which sent the Blues one point clear of Manchester United.

Carlo Ancelotti's team had lost first place to United following the champions' win against Tottenham on Saturday, but this imperious display was the perfect response to the challenge from Old Trafford.
Ivory Coast forward Kalou scored twice in the first half at Stamford Bridge, then Frank Lampard added a penalty.
Kalou completed his treble after the break and Lampard netted a sublime strike before Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda scored late on to give Chelsea their third seven-goal haul this season.
The Blues' lacklustre defeat at Tottenham last weekend had allowed United back into a title race which neither team has been able to lead for long.
But Chelsea's biggest win of the campaign leaves Ancelotti's men still on course to win the league for the first time since 2006.
The crucial test comes next Sunday at Liverpool - where victory would leave just a home game against Wigan on May 9 standing between Chelsea and the title.

Manchester United - Most valuable club in the World

The American wealth magazine put the Red Devils at the top of their latest list of the world's richest football clubs, with an estimated value of £1.2 billion.
And that leaves United flying high at the top of the sporting tree, ahead of the NFL's top team the Dallas Cowboys (£1.072 billion), and baseball's number one club the New York Yankees (£1.040 billion).
Spanish giants Real Madrid are second on the list of top football clubs at £859m, with Arsenal third on £767m.
European and Spanish champions Barcelona are fourth on £650m, but are the only debt-free side in a top six that is rounded out by Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
Chelsea have slipped behind Juventus to ninth on the list after posting losses of nearly £50 million - the worst financial performance of any club in the top 20 - while Newcastle cling on to their place in the top 20 despite their relegation at the end of last season.

Sir Alex Ferguson's successor??

Fergie is set to hang up his watch and chewing gum at the end of next season and he is convinced fellow Glaswegian Moyes is the man to provide the continuity needed to ensure United continue to compete for top honours.

Bayern Munich - Lyons Team News

Holger Badstuber and captain Mark van Bommel are both suspended for the home side after collecting their third yellow cards of the campaign last time out.

Meanwhile, Danijel Pranjic, who is set to deputise for Van Bommel, will be banned for the return leg if he picks up a booking.

Bayern put in an emphatic display to beat Hannover 7-0 in the Bundesliga at the weekend, although Miroslav Klose was omitted from the squad due to an abdominal infection and could miss out again.

They have no major injury concerns and Franck Ribery is set to play despite being quizzed by police as a witness regarding a case of prostitution regarding a minor.

Lyon, though, have a few absentees for the game as they look to gain an advantage ahead of the second leg at Stade Gerland on 27th April.

Jean-Alain Boumsong (calf), Francois Clerc (knee), Mathieu Bodmer (hamstring) and Joan Hartock (Achilles) are all unavailable.

Long-term absentee Anderson has been out since last season while Jean II Makoun has not played since March with a groin problem.

The two sides were drawn against each other in the group stages of the 2008/09 competition with the score ending 1-1 in Munich as the Germans came out on top 3-2 in Lyon.

Ribery amidst sex scandal!!

Bayern Munich closed ranks around Franck Ribery on Tuesday after an under-age call-girl scandal that exploded around the French midfielder on the eve of the Champions League semi-final against Lyon.

"This is, of course, an issue for us," said Bayern's director of sport Christian Nerlinger with his team set to face Lyon in Wednesday's last four first leg tie at Munich's Allianz Arena.

"But for the time being, we have to concentrate on the football, including Franck."

According to a French judicial official, the 27-year-old Ribery could face charges over alleged relations with an under-age girl after French police quizzed him as part of investigations into prostitution at a Paris nightclub.

Ribery trained with Bayern on Tuesday for the first time since the scandal broke on Sunday and he is expected to face Lyon on Wednesday, having been spoken to about the issue by Munich's bosses on Monday.

If charged and found guilty Ribery, who is married with two daughters, could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros (60,000 dollars).

Both of his team-mates Philipp Lahm and Daniel van Buyten were staying tight-lipped in Tuesday's pre-match press conference and admitted the club had instructed them to say as little as possible about the scandal.

"Franck trained very well, is really motivated and happy to be able to play," said van Buyten.

"In this important phase, it is important to concentrate completely on the game.

"He can think more clearly about the future after the match."

Ribery has a contract at Munich until June 2011 and he has said a decision about whether he will stay with Bayern is expected to be made soon, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both chasing his signature.

But Nerlinger said there is no sign of a decision being made by Ribery in the near future.

And Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he has heard nothing: "It's all quiet on the Ribery front" he said when asked about a possible transfer.

With head coach Louis van Gaal back in his native Holland due to a bereavement, assistant coach Andries Jonker took training on Tuesday and said Ribery was in contention to be selected.

"Franck Ribery has done well in training and it looks like he may be part of our team for Wednesday," he said.

Kiss of disaster!!

Inter Milan’s transformation from Champions League also-rans to serious title contenders can be traced back to the day coach Jose Mourinho sauntered into town less than two years ago.

The road has been a bumpy one but Tuesday’s vibrant 3-1 win over holders Barcelona in their semi-final, first leg left home fans in dreamland having witnessed one of the great European nights at the famous old San Siro.

The rafters literally shook as 75,000 supporters bounced up and down in sheer delight after goals from Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito gave Inter the edge ahead of next Wednesday’s second leg at the Nou Camp.

World player of the year Lionel Messi, who scored four goals in the last round against Arsenal, was almost completely nullified by Javier Zanetti’s constant harrying and Inter’s ability to break so quickly that the ball was often behind him.

“We did a good defensive job on Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and we created lots of chances,” Argentina’s Milito told reporters after also being involved in the first two goals.

“My goal? I prefer to talk about my assists. It’s great to set up goals for my team-mates.”

Milito’s work-rate and willingness to chase lost causes sums up the attributes Mourinho has instilled in his players during a run of six straight European victories, including two against Chelsea.

Typical Manchester United!!

Manchester United left it typically late as they went within a point of leaders Chelsea, who were stunned by Tottenham, while Arsenal blew their slim title chances.

City's gut-wrenching loss to their Manchester rivals allowed Spurs to leapfrog them into fourth place, while elsewhere Aston Villa were also triumphant, Everton closed on Liverpool, Bolton now look safe while Hull City and Burnley both appear doomed.

For the third time this season, United scored in the dying moments in their meeting with Manchester rivals City. Saturday's lunchtime clash between the pair lacked intensity and tempo, with the Red Devils just about shading the goalscoring chances. But a draw looked the most likely result as the match entered second half injury-time. However, as United have done so often, their refusal to give up and instead play until the final whistle shone through when Paul Scholes, who signed a new contract at Old Trafford last week, headed past Shay Given to break City hearts and send United within a point of the table-toppers.

The pressure was then on Chelsea, who took on Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday's evening kick-off. The phrase 'it is Chelsea's to lose' has been uttered in the Blues direction, and, not for the first time this campaign, Carlo Ancelotti's men crumbled when in pole position. But, as poor as Chelsea were, Spurs were just as inspired, with the club building on their midweek scalp of Arsenal, helping to forget their FA Cup semi-final exit. The deadlock was broken at White Hart Lane on 15 minutes when Jermain Defoe slotted in from the penalty spot following an alleged handball by John Terry. Then just prior to half-time the in-form Gareth Bale, who is surprisingly not on the shortlist for PFA Young Player of the Year, grabbed Spurs' second with a low strike. Chelsea's misery was compounded when Terry was handed a second yellow card for going in stupidly on Bale before Frank Lampard grabbed a consolation. Next for Spurs is United. Can they make it three 'big four' scalps on the bounce? Chelsea will be hoping so.

Chelsea's loss presented third-place Arsenal, who were seemingly out of the title race during midweek, with an opportunity to haul themselves back into the hunt. The Gunners tackled lowly Wigan and claimed a 2-0 lead as Theo Walcott and Mikael Silvestre scored either side of half-time. Three points looked a certainty for Arsene Wenger's men, who were coasting in the second period. But complacency set in and in the 80th minute Ben Watson bagged to set up a tense finale. Then came another error from goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who was making his first appearance since the horror show in Porto while also celebrating his 25th birthday, as Titus Bramble levelled. And in injury-time, the previously inconceivable became a reality as Charles N'Zogbia fired in to make it 3-2 Wigan at the DW Stadium. Said victory means the Latics are now all-but safe while this is the fourth time this season that Arsenal have suffered back-to-back league defeats

Mozambique 2 Benin 2

Mozambique denied Benin their first win at the Orange Africa Cup of Nations after coming back to draw 2-2 in their Group C encounter on Tuesday in Benguela.

The Mambas came from two goals down to draw two all with the Squirrels thanks to an inspiring second half performance, and to keep their chances on course.

The Beninois commenced the game on a high note with an output that gave an indication of their readiness to break their winless streak at the continental fiesta, by firing from all angles with marksman Razack Omotoyossi leading the onslaught.

Their efforts yielded dividends on 13 minutes when Omotoyossi, scorer of eight goals during the qualifying rounds broke the deadlock from the spot after Mozambican goalie Cossa Albino had fouled him in the penalty area.

The Beninois maintained pressure and the second goal came five minutes later as Mozambican defender Dario Khan scored an own goal in an attempt to clear his lines during one of the raids by the West Africans.

With defeat staring at them, the Mambas lifted up their game and succeeded in reducing the deficit on 28 minutes through midfielder Almira Lobo who headed home from a corner kick.

The second half belonged to the Mambas as they forced the Squirrels to chase their shadows. Led in attack by veteran captain Manuel Bucuane nicknamed “Tico Tico,” they kept the Benin rearguard on their toes in their quest for the equalizer.

On 55 minutes, the much sought after equalizer came through Goncalves Fumo who connected home from a fast throw-in after Benin goalie Yoann Djidonou had cleared the ball away.

It was the Mambas all the way for the remainder of the game and captain Bucuane was denied the winner in the closing stages by Benin goalkeeper Djidonou, who spilled away the formers goalbound low pile effort, to the dismay of the Mozambicans.

Mambas captain, Bucuane, who made his Africa Cup of Nations debut in 1996 in South Africa was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the match.

The result means Egypt occupy the apex of the standings on three points, Benin and Mozambique in that order on one point each with Nigeria at the bottom pointless.

Benin will face neighbours Nigeria on Saturday, January 16 whilst Mozambique face holders Egypt at the Ombaka Stadium in Benguela.

Egypt Beat Nigeria 3-1

Egypt beat World Cup qualifier Nigeria 3-1 Tuesday, beginning its bid for an unprecedented third straight title in the African Cup of Nations. Benin and Mozambique played to a 2-2 tie in the other game.

The Egyptians won despite missing key players, rallying from a one-goal deficit behind scores by Emad Meteab, Ahmed Hassan and Mohammed Naguy. Nigeria, looking for its third title, took the lead in the 12th minute on a goal by Chinedu Obasi.

Egypt, a six-time champion, leads Group C with three points. Benin and Mozambique have one point each, and Nigeria none.

Egypt failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing a playoff to Algeria. It hasn’t played in a World Cup since 1990.

In the other group game, Razak Omotoyossi made a penalty kick in 13th minute to put Benin ahead. An own-goal by Mozambique’s Khan in the 19th minute made it 2-0. Lobo scored for Mozambique with a header in the 29th off a corner, and Fumo tied it the 55th from 10 yards out.

The next Group C matches are Saturday, with Nigeria playing Benin and Mozambique facing Egypt. On Wednesday, Group D starts with Cameroon vs. Gabon and Zambia vs. Tunisia.

Angola - Mali open Orange Nations Cup

Sunday, the curtain will be drawn on the 27th Orange CAF Nations Cup final in Luanda Angola.while the Angolans will be expecting their team to make it to the final of the competition and even win the cup, the Malians are not under such a pressure and this suits them fine.

since october 10 2008 when they were eliminated from the first round of the CAN-Nations Cup qualifier, came out second of group 3 behind Benin, the angolans have not gotten involved in major competitions contending itself instead with friendly matches that have not really brought out the best in the team.in July, the authorities recriuited the Portuguese Manuel Jose hoping that his superlative showing with the Egyptian club Al Ahly will rub off on the team.

Under him the team played a total of nine matches, won two against Togo and Malta, drew six and lost one against Estonia on december 30 in Portugal where they were in camp. if the attack can be said not to be potent with seven goals, the defence can be credited with conceding just five goals.

Angola, world cup qualifiers in 2006 are loooking forward to another glorious dawn in their football, despite the pressure that goes with host countries.

The Eagles of Mali on the other hand, too long in the shadows of African football, are targetting this competition to satisfy the yearnings of a hungry country. so far the spanish based trio of Mahamadou Diara, Seydou Keita, Frederick Oumar Kanoute have not risen to the expectations of taking Mali to great heights.

it is hoped that unlike what happenned in 2008 when they had to bow out in a group involving Nigeria, Benin and Cote Divoire, this time around the memories of 1972, finalist and 1994 and 2002 semi finalist will push them even further.

meanwhile, the Malians are no strangers to opening matches. in 1994 they spoilt the party for host Tunisia when they won 2-0, and in 2002 before their public they rallied back through Seydou Keita to level a George Weah goal.

just back from a four nation playing tour against North Korea,Iran, and Qatar the Eagles lost 0-1 against the Pharaohs of Egypt.

all is set for a match that will also determine the preparedness of the host to organise the competition.

Ivory Coast cruise past Tanzania's Taifa Stars

Dar Es Salaam - A header by Chelsea striker Didier Drogba lifted Côte d'Ivoire to a 1-0 victory over Tanzania on Monday as the Ivorians began their last stage of preparations for next week's African Cup of Nations.

Playing at Dar es Salaam's National Stadium, the home side started quite brightly but never found a way through the tough Ivorian defense.

After a long spell of pressure, the Elephants took the lead in the 39th minute when Drogba flung himself forward to nod a cross by Emmanuel Eboué out of the reach of Tanzania goalkeeper Muharami Mohamed.

Vahid Halilhodzic completely changed his team in the second half of the match, giving the rest of the Elephants a chance to get some live game action, but Tanzania - ranked 106th in the world - nearly equalized at the end when Jerson Tegete struck the post.

The Ivorians open Group B play a week from Monday in Cabinda against Burkina Faso.

The 50-man delegation including players and officials is expected to arrive in the afternoon before their first build-up against Taifa Stars of Tanzania on Monday at the National Stadium.
The secretary general of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Fredrick Mwakalebela, told Cafonline.com that Cote D’Ivoire Coast that will also represent the continent in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa will also battle Rwanda at the same venue three days after the Monday game. Mwakalebela said the two matches, which form part of Cote d’Ivoire’s build up for the Orange Africa Cup of Nations finals will also be a showcase for Tanzania fans and players alike.
“The arrival of the two teams will give us experience to host other countries which we are still negotiating with to use Tanzania as a base for their build up and training ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa,” said Mwakalebela.
Mwakalebela said The Elephants are expected to fly in with English premiership regulars in the likes of Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Solomon Kalou, Yaya Toure who features for the reigning European Champions League winners Barcelona. Others are Aruna Dindane and Manchester City’s Habib Kolo Toure.
Meanwhile, Taifa Stars head coach Marcio Maximo has said his players are at high morale ahead of the friendly opener of the year. “The response is good and fans should expect a good performance,” said Maximo. However, Maximo said the team’s trio of Mussa Hassan, Kelvin Yondan and Shadrack Nsajigwa are doubtful

Manchester United suffers a shameful loss!!

Jermaine Beckford consigned Manchester United to FA Cup humiliation by sending League One Leeds United into the fourth round with a first-half winner that signalled the Yorkshire club’s first victory at Old Trafford since 1981.

Beckford, who is expected to leave Leeds for Newcastle United this month, scored on 19 minutes to become the first Leeds player since Brian Flynn to score a winner at Old Trafford.

The defeat for United also ensured that Sir Alex Ferguson experienced a third round exit for the first time. It was United’s first defeat to lower league opposition in the FA Cup since a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth in 1984.

United manager Ferguson had vowed to field a strong team against the Elland Road outfit, but the Scot performed a selection about-turn by naming youngsters Darron Gibson, Gabriel Obertan and Fabio da Silva in his starting line-up.

Having seen a half-strength team defeat Spurs in the Carling Cup quarter-final last month, however, Ferguson would have expected his players to repeat that performance against an opponent from the third tier.

But the Premier League champions were outfought by Leeds from the kick-off and the sheer intensity of the fixture appeared to catch many of United’s players by surprise.

Ferguson had spoken of the bitter rivalry between the two clubs in the build-up to the game and how his players could expect a raucous atmosphere with Leeds backed by 9,000 travelling fans.

The message apparently didn’t sink in, though, and Grayson’s team were the first to every ball in a ferociously fought encounter.

So United could have no complaints when Beckford put Leeds ahead on 19 minutes with what could be his last goal for the club.

Jonny Howson’s stunning 40 yard pass found Beckford 25 yards from goal and the forward escaped Wes Brown before guiding a left foot shot into the far corner past goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

United attempted to respond, but Leeds matched fire with fire, with captain Richard Naylor joining Brown in referee Chris Foy’s notebook.

Wayne Rooney was denied an equaliser on 25 minutes, though, when full-back Jason Crowe cleared his goalbound effort off the line.

Other than that near miss, however, United struggled to test Leeds goalkeeper Casper Ankergren and it was the visitors that looked likelier to add to the scoring.

The game threatened to boil over 48 minutes when Brown’s late tackle on Michael Doyle prompted both sets of players to confront each other on the edge of the United penalty area.

Once the game settled down, Leeds continued to take the game to United and Beckford should have made it 2-0 on 78 minutes when he sprung the offside trap before shooting wide of the far post.

And substitute Robert Snodgrass rattled the United crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick on 80 minutes.

Despite finishing the game with Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen on the pitch, though, United just could not find the goal to save the tie and avoid humiliation.

Ivory Coast coach fears for Chelsea’s Didier Drogba

Head coach Vahid Halilhodzic says he is worried about the freshness of Ivory Coast’s main striker Didier Drogba.

The Bosnian was speaking at a news conference before the team depart for their training camp in Tanzania.

He said: “Drogba has played two matches in three days plus the travel. If we’re not careful he’ll come to pieces.

“I’m very worried about his freshness. He’s committed to lots of things and has lots of ambition. He wants to win everything. [He's] playing too much.”

Halilhodzic revealed that Drogba is nursing a slight ankle injury, but the Chelsea striker later told journalists that he is fit.

Ivory Coast travel to Tanzania on Saturday for two friendly games, before heading to Angola next week for the tournament.

Ivory Coast are in Group B, with Togo, Ghana and Burkina Faso

Nigerian Squad is here!!

Nigeria have trimmed their African Cup of Nations list to 24 from the squad of 32 earlier announced by head coach Shaibu Amodu.
